Why Local? Wednesdays: Relationships

These are the hands that grow my food.

Getting to know the folks who grow your food is like getting to know an artist whose paintings or sculptures adorn your home.

We were blessed with a great weekend out in the mountains, a weekend full of laughter, new and old friends, bluegrass music, and locally-grown and sustainably-produced food. Even better we were able to celebrate the marriage of two very good friends who also happen to be the farmers that provide our meat, eggs, and some of our veggies. We met so many interesting people (including other farmers, medical students, environmental and social justice advocates, and the ladies who wrote and photographed a book chronicling the life of holocaust survivors in Kentucky).

When you go to the farmer's markets or pick up your CSA orders this spring, I encourage you to take a few minutes each time to get to know the people who have spent much time and effort in raising real, quality food for the nourishment of you and your family. If you're buying at a grocery store that sources local foods, find out who the farmers are see if you can find out any information.

Often when we sit down for dinner, Brandon will ask, "Is this from Adam's farm?" I love that we can enjoy our food and think specifically of the person who helped grow it. We can also give thanks for that person and seek specific blessings for them because we know them by name!

If you are comfortable (and interested) see if you can take a trip out to the farm to see for yourself how the process works. We have been out to our friend's farm twice now and are hoping to go back again soon. I have seen the land plowed with horses and helped mix the compost. Brandon and I were able to help get the water--fresh from a real spring--that would be used in the biodynamic growing of fruits and vegetables.

The farmers are real people, growing real food, who probably love conversation and relationships just as much as we do! Take advantage of that and nourish not only your body with food but your soul with good friendship.
