I love to bake, but there have been several times recently when baking was not an option. like when I made cookies and cupcakes for the same party and it all ended up in the trash can! For whatever reason, there was no way that baking a cake or something nice was going to work out, so I called one of my favorite local bakeries, Cake Flour on Market.
Cake Flour uses many local and organic ingredients and seeks to "offer quality, natural alternatives to processed 'fake' food so people can experience the difference." quote and logo from Cake Flour's website
I would say they are doing a darn good job! I have had their chocolate ganache torte (first photo), chocolate and blueberry cheesecakes (third photo) and several other cookies and cupcakes including some kind of bourbon cupcake around Derby time. Everything has been de-li-cious.
One thing I appreciate about the company is that they seem to be pretty realistic. Their flour may not be sourced directly from Louisville, but they still use organic, unbleached and unbrominated flours. Their eggs are local, but their sugar isn't (it is organic, though). It is those kinds of things that I--someone who craves balance--really value. Trying to find "local sugar" is probably impossible here in Kentucky that is just a guess! but there are lots of farmers who sell their eggs locally. They don't try to sell you on the whole "local scene" thing in ways that aren't really true. Get what I mean?
While buying cakes and other treats from Cake Flour or your own local bakery really is a wonderful alternative to the 'fake' stuff, it isn't always a cheap one but local bakeries don't get their grain subsidized either!...that's another post! Sometimes it really is worth it to spring for the good stuff. I figure that I am paying not just for the time and lack of stress of baking my own cake while also trying to clean my house, feed my baby, and keep my sanity, but I am also paying for quality ingredients and the art of a fine chocolate torte, not to mention the enjoyment of celebrating a friend's hard work, a new baby or whatever else is going on in life. I am also supporting a local business and voting for real ingredients with my dollars. Well worth it.
