Why Local? Wednesday: Getting Out of a Rut

I was scrolling through some of my old posts looking for ideas to help me my friend get out of the cooking rut I told you about.  Didn't I just write five tips for making time for healthy foods?

Sometimes though the problem isn't always time, is it?  No, for me there are plenty of other reasons and excuses I don't prepare healthy foods--such as my own desire to be doing something else, not having someone to share the food with when I'm eating alone, or even being the only one who wants the home-cooked option.   This is fine once in a while, but I make habits much more easily than I break them.

This is where local foods come in to play.  For me, there is so much commitment and enjoyment with local foods, that it makes it much more difficult for me to able to justify not using it with the possibility of the food going to waste than when I picked up the item at the grocery store and can easily go back and get more.

With local foods, I tend to be much more conscious of the limited resources available for getting the food, the limited time foods are available when they are purchased seasonally, and the work that has gone into getting that food into my home.

I find that I am throwing out less local food at the end of the week than even the same grocery-purchased foods.  I am also more able to view my cooking time as creative time when it involves using seasonal and local foods.  It's hard not to think creatively when you have purple carrots!

Kim responded to my last post reminding me of that, "I always feel satisfied once the meal is complete and on the table when I have cooked it myself rather than resorting to the quicker, less healthy alternatives." Well said, Kim!

What are some ways you get out of the rut when you just don't fee like cooking?

Joining a CSA has definitely helped us to get out of our rut, especially since they include recipes for the produce in our boxes. I've linked up with "Why Local Wednesday" with my blog today about purple potatoes...
